Course Irrigation Works – Taking Relief From Affected Area

Posted on: 26 June

The current course works relating to the course irrigation has brought many questions regarding relief from affected areas.

The local rule covering the works is:

4. Areas Affected by the Irrigation Works

When a player’s ball lies on an area affected by the irrigation works, they may take free relief once by dropping the original ball or another ball at the nearest point of relief no nearer the hole under Rule 16.1b.

How do you take relief and what is the nearest point of relief?

If your golf ball is in an area affected by the irrigation works and there is interference, you may take free relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in this relief area as shown below.

Reference Point: The nearest point of complete relief in the general area. This does not mean the nicest point of relief, it is the nearest point of relief.

Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: One club-length, but with these limits:

  • Limits on Location of Relief Area:
  • Must be in the general area,
  • Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and

There must be complete relief from all interference by the abnormal course condition.

Whenever you are taking relief under the temporary local rule associated with the Irrigation Works your marker must agree that you are entitled to relief.
