Yarra Yarra vs Victoria GC
Played at Commonwealth GC Result: Victoria GC defeated Yarra 6/1
While the score indicates otherwise our match this week against Victoria was a tight affair with three matches finishing at the 17th and one at the 18th. After our win last week we kept the same playing combination:
Charlotte led us off playing against Ari Cathcart who hit a very long ball however was inclined to be wayward at times which allowed Charlotte to stay in the mix. Ari won holes 1 and 2 and continued to maintain her lead throughout the match. Charlotte was two down at the turn and then was four down after 12 however not to be daunted Charlotte mounted a fight back winning the 15th and then the 16th with a birdie going to the 17th one down. The 17th was tight however Ari sunk an excellent putt to win the hole and the match 2/1.
Rebecca played a great game of golf today with 12 pars. She putted really well and was her steady self. Steph Hester from Vic knew she was in for a tough day and needed birdies to win holes. The match was square at the turn. Steph did make birdie on a couple of the closing holes. As both girls stood on the final hole it was still game on. However both hit the green and despite a great effort, Rebecca lost 2 down.
After a sandy start and going 2 down after 2 and a swing not feeling ‘right’ all day, Janelle fought tenaciously to take her young long hitting (no driver in the bag!) rival Naysa Sohail to the 17th. A couple of cruel bounces and putts made it extra hard to put the necessary pressure on. A good match.
Vanessa described her game today as starting well playing solid golf however then having a ‘slump’ in the middle. Her opponent Ashni Solanki in contrast played consistently well bringing home the win 3/1 for Victoria.
Lauren’s match against Jess Clarke was a tight tussle until the last couple of holes when Jess pulled away with some outstanding approach shots to the green. This pressure proved to be unbeatable in the end, but a fine match from Lauren.
Mel had a very tough task playing at number two and coming up against Nadene Cole, a seasoned professional golfer. Mel fought hard to stay in the match however her opponent didn’t give Mel any opportunity to take advantage.
Shanaiah was up against Stacey Peters a former winner of several events on the European tour, so potentially a really tough match. Both girls played wonderful golf with “hit fairways” and greens in regulation the norm for the day. Shanaiah made the turn 2 up due to some “clutch” and birdie putts and continued waving her magic wand on the back 9 ensuring a comfortable 3&2 victory.
We now have a week off. Our next match is at Metropolitan vs Huntingdale on March 14th.
Thank you to those who came to watch the team – we always feel very encouraged and supported when we see Yarra Yarra people cheering us on. Thank you to Jim Peterson for coming along armed with his camera – we look forward to seeing the pics Jim!
