YARRA YARRA JUNIOR OPEN TOURNAMENT
Posted on: 9 April
Wednesday 20 April 2022 saw the return of the Yarra Yarra Junior Open. Attracting a full field of 77 players, including 10 of our junior members, players went out in wintery conditions for a 1pm multi-tee start. The recent heavy rain saw the greens a little softer than expected, however Clint and the grounds staff prepared the course magnificently.
Whilst the conditions were difficult for most, some fantastic scores were posted, including a 67 from Michael Song of Metropolitan GC, and a 69 from Edward Sergeant of Geelong GC.
For our juniors, this day also provided opportunity to play for the Hartley Mitchell Family Trophy, awarded to the Yarra Yarra junior member with the lowest net score. Club Historian Peter Swan was in attendance to briefly speak to the significance of the Hartley Mitchell to Yarra Yarra. Hartley won the Victorian Amateur Championship in 1955 and the Australian Foursomes Championship in 1949, as well as the Yarra Yarra Golf Club Championship five times. His wife Peggy was also Club Champion, in 1964.
Club Captain David Meagher conducted the presentation, awarding some fantastic prizes for gross, net and nearest-the-pin competitions. The Hartley Mitchell Trophy was awarded to Tori Sam. Playing off a 13 handicap, Tori scored an impressive 67 net. Other notable performances included Amelia Harris winning the girls best gross with a score of 75.
Huge thanks to the grounds staff, hospitality staff, Administration and ProShop for making this a wonderful event. We got extremely positive feedback from players, parents, friends and spectators alike.
