Schumacher Cup Final
Posted on: 29 June
One of the privileges of being the allocated referee for a board event such as the Schumacher Cup, is being able to see good golf up close. The match between Charlie Hay and James Mason, played in blustery but fine conditions, did not disappoint.
Both players bombed their drives on every hole and their iron play towards the greens were almost faultless. A prime example was on the 14th hole. With a strong tail wind, Charlie and James left themselves wedges into the green with both having birdie putts of 2m or less. James played first and got his birdie, Charlie’s slid past on the left and James conceded the par. The hole was halved as James had to give Charlie a shot.
James was 2 up at the turn. Despite a birdie on the 12th hole, Charlie was not able to make a dent in James’ lead with James eventually winning on the 16th hole – 4/2. In the end, it came down to James being the stronger of the pair around and on the greens.
Both players are to be congratulated on making the final and for playing the match in great spirit.
