2022 Chris Wagstaff Memorial Trophy Final

Posted on: 23 July

Glorious winter weather and an excellently prepared and presented golf course provided perfect conditions for the final of the Chris Wagstaff fourball handicap match play which was contested on Friday 22 July.

This popular YYGC women’s board event was first played in 1964 in honour of Mrs Wagstaff who was Lady Captain and Lady President during the 1950’s.

Our finalists for this year were Sharon Mustac/Laraine Natilli playing against Andree Leigh/Jennifer Cox, with Andree and Jenny winning on the day to take the memorial trophy.

The team of Andree and Jenny came out of the blocks on fire, Andree parring 7 of the first 9 holes to take the match to 5 up at the turn. While they paused for breath, Sharon and Laraine found their game and clawed back the lead hole by hole until we reached the 18th hole all square. A nail biting half on 18 resulted in us heading down the 19th hole to begin the playoff. Here Andree returned to form, sinking a testing putt to take the match.

Despite the difference in handicaps, the fourball handicap match play format meant for a very balanced contest with some great golf played by both sides. Congratulations to all players for competing in such a friendly and well spirited manner, a credit to our club which prides itself on the values of integrity and respect.
